Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Q1. What is 4D ultrasound?

» 4D ultrasound adds time or motion to a 3D image. Hence the result is a moving 3D image. 2D images are the pictures produced for your diagnostic ultrasound and although they can be seen well by sonographers, they are often difficult to recognise to the untrained eye. 3D images are images taken in a 3D format; however they are usually at a higher resolution than 4D images.

Q2. Is 2D/3D/4D ultrasound safe?

» Studies done on the effect of ultrasound have shown that this modality does not currently present any risk to the mother or the unborn baby. These studies have been undertaken for over 30 years. We recommend that should you have any concerns that you consult with your obstetrician, managing GP or other independant health professions such as Sonologists, Sonographers or Midwifes to address any concerns that you may have before booking with us.

Q3. Who will be performing the ultrasound?

» Your ultrasound scan will be conducted by an experienced photographer trained in 2D/3D/4D ultrasound scanning who has a passion for introducing families to their baby. As this is a non-diagnostic ultrasound, no medical experience is necessary to operate the ultrasound machine.

Q4. Does this replace my 12 week or 18-20 anatomy week scan?

» No, these scans are non diagnostic and voluntary. Please follow your doctor’s instructions and ensure that all diagnostic ultrasound scans including the 12 week and the 18-22 week anatomy scans are performed at a dedicated and accredited diagnostic ultrasound facility. Our scans are used to enhance the bonding experience of family and friends with the unborn baby and to check the gender if required. Before we perform our bonding ultrasound we require that a diagnostic medical ultrasound report, CD, photo or films be produced.

Q5. Is this scan covered by Medicare or private insurance?

» As this is a non diagnostic service it is not covered by Medicare. At the present time this form of scanning is not covered by private health insurance.

Q6. How do I pay?

» Eftpos, MasterCard, VISA or cash (please have the correct amount for the chosen package).

Q7. What happens if you see an abnormality?

» As we are a non diagnostic service we do not search for fetal abnormalities, nor do we do any detailed studies into the fetal anatomy, for instance the heart. This will be done in your Medicare covered 12 week or 18-22 week ultrasound scans at an accredited diagnostic ultrasound facility. Staff at the studio are not trained or accredited to offer medical advice.

Q8. Do I need a referral?

» No you do not need a referral as this is a non diagnostic scan. We require for all packages that you have had a dating, 12 week nuchal or 18-22 week anatomy scan as it is our requirement that you have had a diagnostic medical ultrasound prior to using our service.

Q9. What is my preparation and paperwork?

» Unlike your diagnostic scan, we do not want you to have a full bladder. However, we would like you to be well hydrated 3-4 days prior to the scan. There is a Consent form that you need to complete on the day of your appointment at our studio. The Ultrasound Nursery adheres to the Privacy Act 1998 and our Privacy Policy is available on request.

Q10. Can I buy a gift voucher?

» Yes we have gift certificates available for all of our packages and they make wonderful presents! They are valid for 1 year from purchase and cannot be used after 33 weeks. The gift certificates are non refundable and are not able to be exchanged for cash under any circumstances.

Q11. When is the best time to have the 3D/4D ultrasound on the baby?

» We have found that 25-30 weeks is the optimal time for doing these scans on the baby, however we are very happy to scan your baby after 16 weeks and up to 33 weeks, after you have had a diagnostic ultrasound scan. We encourage that twin pregnancies should come in at 25 weeks. The ideal time for nice face views is at 27 weeks if you are slim to average build and 29 weeks if you are more full-figured.

Q12. Will my baby look like those advertised and present in the media?

» There are many factors which influence the picture but the most important factor is for the mum to be well hydrated. Other factors include baby’s position (breech or face down), placental position, structures in front of the face such as umbilical cord, hands or feet, how many weeks pregnant, size of the mum and the baby and the amount of fluid around the baby. All of these factors affect the sound transmission and all babies and mums scan differently.

The Ultrasound Nursery will endeavour to produce the highest grade images that can be achieved on the day. Those images that are seen in much of the media are produced in the most optimal of circumstances however all images on our Website, brochures and Facebook are from scans performed at The Ultrasound Nursery.

Q13. Can you tell us the baby’s gender?

» We recommend gender determination from about 16 weeks and we can check the gender with all of our packages. If you are slim to average size we can generally see the gender from 15 weeks. If you are full figured, we recommend waiting until 18 weeks. If you want a surprise, we will avoid looking at the gender and produce beautiful images of the rest of the baby.

Q14. Can I bring guests?

» Of course, we can seat up to seven guests in comfort to watch and there is a maximum of 8 people allowed in the room including the mum. Children are very welcome.

Q15. When will I get my CD, DVD and photos?

» The CD, DVD and prints on glossy professional photographic paper will be available at the end of the scan. Additional prints are $10 and an extra CD of images is $10.

Problems viewing the CD or DVD is very rare. However, if there is any problem with your CD or DVD you will need to let us know within 1 week of having your scan. This is because scans are deleted from the machines within 7 days and we will not be able to replace your CD or DVD. In order to receive a new copy, you will need to return the faulty CD or DVD prior to us mailing a new copy so that we can check what went wrong.

Q16. What packages do you do and what do they cost? What are your most popular packages?

»Please visit our PRICING page for detailed information.

Package C is popular for those wanting a unique keepsake of baby at two stages of the pregnancy. Many clients book two Package Cs – first between 16 – 24 weeks to find out gender and the second between 26 – 30 weeks for nice face images.

Package B is popular for those wanting to share their 3D/4D experience with family and friends as more time is available during this scan to watch what baby is up to and debate who baby looks like 🙂
